Arachnophobia is the excessive and unreasonable fear of spiders and other arachnids like scorpions. Exposure to the phobia triggers an anxiety response, often in the form of a panic attack. Arachnophobia can be found under Axis I of the DSM IV with other mental anxiety disorders. It is characterized by these points:
  • Persistent, unreasonable fear of an object/situation
  • Provokes an immediate anxiety response
  • Person recognizes that the fear is excessive
  • Interferes with normal routine
Some statistics show that 50% of women and 10% of men show symptoms. This fear may becasue by a biological reason stemming back to early humans. Arachnophobia may have been an instincitve response that helped early humans to survive. The fear os]f spiders, in no way, infers a cowardly or weak mind to those suffering. It is an uncontrolled phobia, and many people around the world suffer from it.

The patient's bain activity begins to decrease upon exposure to spiders and this therapy's effect worked for over six months.
