A phobia (from the Greek: φόβος, phóbos, meaning "fear" or "morbid fear") is a type of anxiety disorder. It is characterized by an intense, persistent, and most importantly irrational fear. This can be a fear of a particular situation, activities, things, animals, or people. The main symptom of this disorder is the excessive and unreasonable desire to avoid the feared stimulus. As with other disorders, it can only be diagnosed if it is considered to be dysfunctional; this is because it is, by nature, both deviant and distressful.

Treatments: There are various forms of treatment, including medications and behavior therapy. The patient could take Beta blockers (block stimulating effects of adrenaline on body, effective for those who have severe stage fright), Antidepressants (SSRIs to influence mood) or Sedatives ( help patiet relax by reducing anxiety felt). For behavior therapy, desensitization or expose therapy may be helpful as well as gradual and repeated exposure. Specific phobias are generally treated with behavior therapy, while other use medications more often.
